Te Tāwharau o Ngāti Pūkenga Trust Deed

The Te Tāwharau o Ngāti Pūkenga Trust Deed was developed in 2012 – 2013 and signed in April 2013.  During the first elections in 2015, improvements to the election process were identified.   Until the settlement was received however, the Crown had to approve any changes to the Trust Deed.  Now that we have received our settlement, we no longer need to consult the Crown.  The trustees have therefore decided to review the election process.  As well, given the Trust has been operating for almost five years, the trustees have decided to review all of the Trust Deed and check whether other improvements can be made.

An independent Trust facilitator will be appointed by the trustees to review the Trust Deed and he or she will need to consult with Ngāti Pūkenga.  Some of the things we’d like you to think about before then include (but are not limited to):

Trustee representation
Currently, Te Tāwharau o Ngāti Pūkenga Trust (the Trust) has four Trustees and four Alternates, with each kāinga electing one Trustee and one Alternate.  Should we have Alternates or should they all be Trustees?

Organisational structure
Below is the structure developed before the Trust was established.  Five years on, do you think this is still appropriate?

Election procedures
Are there ways in which it can be improved?

Accountability and transparency
Te Tāwharau holds regular hui a kāinga and an Annual General Meeting.  Are there other things you would like to see?

Communication and engagement
How do you like to find out what is happening?  Are there better ways to communicate with you?  Do you still want your panui posted to you or should we email it? Please let us know by emailing tetawharau@ngatipukenga.com

These are just some of the things to think about.  Any other ideas you may have are welcome.  If you would like a copy of the Trust Deed, let us know at:  tetawharau@ngatipukenga.com or  you can download a copy from our website here: www.ngatipukenga.com/te-tawharau/te-tawharau-documents
